Inhalation sampling & histological assessment

It is vital with inhalation studies to provide consistent levels of tissue from the correct areas in order to provide the pathologist with the tools to make a fair comparison and accurate diagnosis.

There are many specialist techniques within this field to provide optimum presentation of both soft and hard tissue samples from a range of species. For example: The larynx can be step-sectioned to give consistent levels to demonstrate the different epithelial cell types and underlying seromucinous glands and epithelial vocal folds.

The carina can be sectioned across the mainstem bronchi to show the epithelial changes at the primary exposure point. The lungs can have an extended evaluation to include sections from all lobes. The nasal turbinates can have consistent levels taken to represent exposure at different epithelial points and the nasopharynx if required.
