Biocides

Biocides control harmful or unwanted organisms through chemical or biological means. Specific terminology and definitions related to biocides vary around the world. For example, in the U.S., biocides are known as antimicrobial pesticides. Furthermore, the term biocide can describe both an active substance and the specific product containing the active substance. Examples of biocidal products include disinfectants, wood preservatives and pest control products.

In the EU and EEA, ECHA regulates biocides mainly through the Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR), although other regulations can apply in certain circumstances. In the U.S., the EPA regulates biocides, like pesticides, under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Other countries around the world have their own specific schemes. For example, South Korea has adopted K-BPR; a scheme that is very closely based on the EU-BPR.
